How can a city become more sustainable without leaving anyone behind? How can the energy transition be linked to social cohesion, everyday life, and citizens’ quality of life? These and a series of other critical questions will be addressed during the “Switch On Sustainability” conference, organized by the Energy Poverty Alleviation Office of the City of Athens, as part of the Sustainable Energy Days 2026 initiative, on Wednesday, May 20, at the Serafio complex.
The Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, stated:
“The energy transition cannot focus solely on technology or infrastructure. First and foremost, it must focus on people. At the City of Athens, we invest in policies that connect sustainability with social justice and support for the most vulnerable citizens. The Energy Poverty Alleviation Office of the City of Athens is a characteristic example of this effort, and the ‘Switch On Sustainability’ conference is an important opportunity to open a meaningful dialogue about the cities of the future we want to create.”
The conference, implemented through Develop Athens, aims to serve as an open platform for dialogue, knowledge exchange, and the development of partnerships around sustainable development, energy efficiency, and the fight against energy poverty, highlighting the role of cities in shaping a fairer and more resilient energy transition.
Sustainable and Inclusive Cities
The event, moderated by journalist Antonis Sroiter, will bring together representatives from local government, the scientific community, businesses, European organizations, and civil society organizations. Participants will present best practices, innovative approaches, and practical tools that can contribute to the creation of more sustainable and inclusive cities.
Particular emphasis will be placed on combating energy poverty, ensuring a just energy transition, improving energy efficiency in urban environments, addressing the impact of buildings on health and quality of life, and strengthening citizens’ awareness and energy consciousness.
As part of the conference, Athens Mayor Haris Doukas will answer questions by journalist Antonis Sroiter regarding the issue of energy poverty in Athens, the challenges of the green transition, and the role of local government in developing socially oriented policies.
“Switch On Sustainability” is addressed to professionals, researchers, local government officials, policymakers, businesses, organizations, and active citizens interested in sustainable development, energy, and the creation of more resilient and inclusive cities.
